ONGOING CHILD SPONSORSHIP - CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL
One day at the farmer's market, I was approached by a representative from Children International, a top-rated and highly transparent organization, seeking to end generational poverty through access to health care, educational resources and life-changing programs for children and their families.
Wanting to make a positive impact beyond Portland, I signed up to sponsor Celine, a young girl living in the Bicol region of the Philippines. A few things I have learned about her so far: she is the oldest of three kids and helps care for her siblings; age 9, her talents are dancing and drawing; she enjoys studying English and mathematics in school, just like I did. I'm looking forward to exchanging more letters and watching her grow, learning more about what life is like in a different pair of shoes. While a world may separate us, our humanity remains the same.
At $1/day, it was an easy choice to commit some of our resources here at Herbucha to helping Celine. There are other children and families in need around the world who can thrive with your help. Learn more about Children International on their site and stay tuned here for updates about Celine.

SPRING 2022 - OREGON WILD
As spring begins to bloom, we're choosing to practice gratitude for the beautiful planet we live on by contributing 7% of profits to Oregon Wild this season. Oregon Wild represents the fish and wildlife, ancient forests, and rich diversity of public lands and landscapes that make our state so special. They work to protect and restore the parts of the natural world that do not have a human voice, while not forgetting that humans are interconnected with nature and its systems. Across five decades they have successfully fought to protect nearly two million acres of Wilderness, over 2,000 miles of Wild & Scenic Rivers, countless endangered wildlife such as gray wolves, vast stretches of old growth forests, and essential ecosystems all across the state.
Along with dozens of other organizations across the state, we are amplifying Earth Day Oregon to encourage our community to take care of our planet every day. By participating in your own unique way, you can have an influence on others and inspire a greater and global change in the way we treat and interact with our planet. Whether it's recycling and reusing when you can or picking up trash when you see it, every choice counts.

WINTER 2021 - TAKING OWNERSHIP PDX
Blessed with the opportunity to run a kombucha company, one of the first things I wanted to do was use my voice and resources to give back to the community and causes that have tugged at my heartstrings for so long. When rethinking the "Traditional" blend, I came up with the name "Just Kombucha" since it is just that - just kombucha with no additional herbs as we're typically known for (punny, right?). In the more serious sense of the word, I decided to use our brand to stand up for what is right and help create a more just world.
So many causes are important and deserving of help, especially in the current state of our world and economy, so I wasn't quite sure where to start. When searching for a cause this winter, I happened to meet Randal Wyatt of Taking Ownership PDX in a class I was taking at MESO. The timing felt right, as I myself had just taken ownership, and I reached out to learn more. Seeking to use his voice and recognition as a hip hop artist to help others, Randal created Taking Ownership PDX, a community collective of contractors, realtors, neighbors, and businesses that renovate and revive Black-owned homes, to enable Black homeowners to age in place and generate wealth, while deterring predatory investors and realtors to deflect the gentrification process.
Growing up white in the suburbs of Portland, gentrification wasn't really talked about, and it wasn’t until I moved back here after college that I learned just how white Portland is and how it got this way. All people deserve a safe place to live, especially those who it has been taken from already. Grateful for the opportunity to help, Just Kombucha is donating 7% of profits from this season to Taking Ownership PDX. We look forward to participating in a volunteer day soon.
Thank you for reading, for drinking Just Kombucha, and for caring for our community in your own way.
Love and light,
Marissa

While nothing can undo the decades of harm imposed upon Portland's Black community via deliberate historical redlining, gentrification and systemic racism, Taking Ownership is turning the tide with a commitment to impactful grassroots change in support of the Black home owners of our city. " |
